coaches insured
Hi all,
I have taken over my clubs registration but have a query.
is a coach who is a non player registered as a non player then added into the team in which they coach...or
are they registered as a player then added into the team.
I am curious to know if they are insured if they are registered as a non player?
Thanks Kerrie

Hi Kerrie.
I am just a registrar in a GAA club, but I will share my understanding. I can't comment on any insurance policy your club uses. However, if your club is a GAA club then information on the GAA Injury Benefit Fund is currently published at https://www.gaa.ie/api/images/image/upload/t_q-best/za6ldnajoorvgdqhvx9w.pdf.
That document says that in addition to players, the following are covered: "Match officials’ i.e., referees, linesmen or umpires injured while officiating at an official competitive fixture of Hurling, Handball, Gaelic Football or Rounders" and "Voluntary coaches, team managers, selectors and members of official team parties injured during games or training".The document is actually quite ambiguous as to the answer to your question, since it refers to "player" a little too much. However, since the GAA allows women in any of those roles above, and since the GAA requires registration in Foireann which does not permit a woman aged over 12 to be registered as a player, I make the assumption that registration as a non-player suffices in respect of those roles - i.e. to qualify as a claimant under the scheme.
Of course I could be mistaken, so don't rely on my assumption. I'm just explaining that this is the assumption we make in our club.
I will follow here with interest to see if anybody knows of a more authoritative answer.0 -
Thank You so much for all this information. It's very much appreciated
